CHRISTMAS EVE AT THE ESPLANADE
A 15-minute Solo Performance Piece for Teenage Girls by
George Cameron Grant

What would it take to push your child over the edge?
Sixteen-year-old Eve has run away from home and taken refuge in a dark corner of the Esplanade subway station in the Bronx. It is 5 a.m. on Christmas Eve—and she has returned to the place where her eighteen-year-old brother Billy ended his life. Still wearing Billy’s oversized varsity jacket, Eve talks to the brother she has lost and slowly reconstructs the events that brought him to that platform: the revelation that he was in love with another young man, his parents’ rejection, the cruelty of others, and the final abandonment that left him believing there was nowhere else to turn. To Eve, Billy didn’t simply jump. He was pushed.
Now consumed by grief and anger, Eve stands dangerously close to making the same choice.
But on a deserted subway platform, at the darkest moment of her young life, something unexpected gives Eve a reason to reconsider whether she has come there to die—or to begin living again.
CHRISTMAS EVE AT THE ESPLANADE is an intimate, emotionally charged monologue about grief, family rejection, bullying, acceptance and the extraordinary moment when despair gives way to hope.
One bullied child is one too many!
